Beata Obst was born in Nysa, Poland. She graduated from the state art school in Opole and studied at the Art Academy in Nysa. Through a hidden process of selection Obst forms a new reality.
The sourced images are often digitally manipulated but despite this estrangement from their origins, remain closely linked to their reality.
In her series the artist combines traditional portraiture with an unusual perspective: mirroring, duplicating and repeating the figure in different scales, orders or unnatural angles in sterile, undefined spaces painted in intense white. The coldness and emotional distance of the figure towards an observer also results from the interplay of the carefully chosen nuances between black and white as well as the controlled accentuated use of neon colours. The unusual poses reveal a certain withdrawal from an idealised imaginary world, underlining the introverted traits of the characters portrayed.
Obst's work has been exhibited in Germany, including several times at Art Fair Cologne, Stroke Art Fair Munich, in England, Poland, Belgium and the USA.
Obst has lived and worked in Cologne, Germany since 1989.
